Events by Month

March
Washington State Patriotic Day at the Pioneer Middle School in DuPont, WA. This free event celebrates patriotism and honors service members, veterans, first responders and their families. Hosted by the Puget Sound Military Order of World Wars Chapter, it is a great opportunity to see Old Glory on parade, listen to patriotic music, and hear a guest speaker. Our MOAA Chapter is typically represented by at least two members marching in the Massing of the Colors.

May
Chapter representatives attend end of year awards ceremonies for area NJROTC units to present MOAA awards. Chapter representatives also attend high school senior recognition events to present the Chapter scholarships in May/June.

June
USO Golf Tournament - Pitch-A-Ball Fundraiser. Chapter members set up a table at the golf tournament and sell Pitch-A-Ball chances to players. Each chance purchased gives a player the ability to toss the golf ball and not have it count as a stroke. The proceeds from the sale of a Pitch-A-Ball are split half to the USO Northwest and half to the chapter.

August
The Army National Guard OCS Graduation. Partnering with USAA, each year the
Chapter presents each OCS graduate, future second lieutenants with their first set of Gold Bars and a silver dollar “first salute” coin. The coins and gold bars are donated by USAA. The presentation is made the evening before the OCS graduation, at a command barbecue.

September
Thurston County United Way Day of Caring. Chapter members team up to do volunteer work for a nonprofit organization in Thurston County on the Day of Caring.

November
Sports Ball Drop for Santa’s Castle. Santa’s Castle is a nonprofit organization that provides new toys, books and games to active duty military families in Washington state who are experiencing financial hardship. Our MOAA has made it a tradition to donate balls for every sport to the Santa’s Castle as our holiday charitable drive. Chapter members can drop off sports balls or donate money for its purchase.

The Chapter’s annual meeting is held at the November monthly meeting. The members review the Chapter’s past activities, share future plans, vote on the following year’s budget officer’s slate, and any bylaw changes, and we honor chapter members who have passed away during the year.

November/December
Chapter members also serve as “elves” at Santa’s Castle to help with the toy
distribution/shopping. This takes place during the first two weeks after Thanksgiving.
